Frequently Asked Questions
What is the importance of having a trained dog?
What is the difference between on-leash and off-leash training?
What type of training methods do you use?
This is by far the most frequently asked question. People are often looking to find out if you are a "positive" or "negative" trainer. Through various misinformed sources of media and training "experts", the general public has been taught to think of trainers who profess to use purely positive reinforcement techniques as part of an enlightened and sophisticated "new school." Those that use negative reinforcement are thought of as archaic, needlessly cruel, and at the very best, inferior trainers. This way of thinking is a serious oversimplification of a very complex subject. As in most other areas of life, it is neither one extreme nor the other that is most desirable. It is always somewhere in the middle where one would hope to be. The training methodology or techniques which I employ are grounded in evidence-based behavioral science/learning theory, along with my own experience-based intuitive sense. The bottom line is that the way in which I train all dogs always comes from a place of great respect and genuine love. All of the tricks, techniques and theoretical knowledge in the world are meaningless if one does not truly respect and enjoy the relationship with the dog in "training". If you would like to know what kind of trainer you will be working with at Obedience Matters, the best way to find out is to read and watch the video and written testimonials. The results speak for themselves.
